Alphabet Plans Investment of $15bn to Build Artificial Intelligence Data Center in India
Alphabet, Google's holding company Alphabet is set to invest $15bn to build an AI computing facility in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.
This center, to be established in the port city of Visakhapatnam, is set to become a part of Google's international system of AI centers distributed over 12 countries.
"It's the largest AI facility that we plan to invest in across the globe, outside of the United States," the CEO of Google Cloud said at an event in capital Delhi on Tuesday, adding that the funding is to be distributed over the next five years.
This declaration arrives during a period President Trump of the United States has been encouraging US firms to focus on domestic investment.
India's Increasing Significance in AI Computing
India has emerged as a prime location for AI data centers. India's inexpensive data services and quickly expanding digital audience have turned it into a hub for cloud and AI expansion for tech giants.
"The infrastructure will bring our pioneering tech solutions to businesses and consumers in the country, enhancing AI development and stimulating expansion nationwide," stated Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.
Initiative Particulars
A formal agreement to finalise the project is scheduled for signing on Tuesday, state authorities confirmed.
"It is a significant advancement for our state's technological advancement, progress, and international reputation," stated the technology official Minister Nara Lokesh.
This initiative will combine AI and cloud systems with sustainable power solutions and an enhanced optical fiber network.
Data Infrastructure Plans
The venture is part of the local administration's plan to create six gigawatts of data centre capacity by 2029.
Data centres are physical facilities that contain the computer and network hardware that entities use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.
These include servers, storage systems and networking hardware like firewalls and routers, combined with the required energy and climate management infrastructure to run them.
Financial Attractions
In Andhra Pradesh, the government has been granting reduced-cost property and power to draw worldwide funders.
Sector Expansion
The country's computing facility market has developed swiftly in the recent half-decade, exceeding the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and almost increasing threefold its 2019 level.
