UK Extends Methanol Toxicity Advisory List with Eleven Nations

Toxic substance caution sign

British government has added eleven further nations to its official warning list concerning the risks of methanol contamination from tainted spirits.

The revised warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Just last month, authorities had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, in response to a number of high-profile cases including the tragic death of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even tiny quantities of methanol can cause permanent eye damage or fatality within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic chemical typically employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. It is not meant for ingestion.

Although it is inherently formed during the manufacture of spirits, commercial firms lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.

However in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is impossible to notice.

Authorities' Advice for Tourists

Government representative Hamish Falconer emphasized that each tourist should know the indicators of methanol toxicity.

"When you are consuming alcohol overseas, stick to well-known venues and refrain from local brews or free shots," the official warned.

"Should anything feels off, like a fatigue that's way worse than typical or sight issues – seek medical attention fast."

The complete list of destinations identified as posing a risk of industrial alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
